Hat-tricks, derby wins and promotions – a look at Ipswich Town’s 5-0 home wins. Ipswich Town ended their winless run by beating Sheffield United at Portman Road. Ross Halls takes a look at the times the club have secured victory by that score line through the years on Suffolk soil.

Ipswich Town 5-0 Luton Town – October 2006

It was during the 2006/07 season when Town had last won by five goals to nil, with Alan Lee netting a hat-trick for the Blues in a game that was live on Sky Sports.

Sylvain Legwinski and Jaime Peters were the other goalscorers that day for Jim Magilton’s side, who finished that campaign in 14th place.

Ipswich Town 5-0 Wisbech – November 1945

The first time the club recorded this feat in a competitive fixture was the first season after the end of World War 2.

Tommy Parker scored a hat-trick for the Blues as they progressed to the next round of the FA Cup, while George Price bagged a brace in the win against non-league opposition.

Ipswich Town 5-0 West Brom – January 1997

The first of the four times George Burley recorded this scoreline as manager, with the Baggies conceding five against the Blues.

A Paul Holmes own goal started the rout, before Richard Naylor, James Scowcroft, Paul Mason and Micky Stockwell netted one each for Town, who went on to reach the play-offs in the 1996/97 campaign – losing in the semi-finals.

Ipswich Town 5-0 Norwich City – February 1998

The Destruction Derby was to follow a year later as Alex Mathie put himself into club folklore after bagging a first hat-trick against the Canaries.

Dutchman Bobby Petta went on score a brace in the second half. This is not the only big win over our Norfolk neighbours on this list.

Ipswich Town 5-0 Sunderland – December 2001

The Blues ended 2001 with an emphatic victory over the Blackcats, including an Alun Armstrong brace and a first Town goal for Thomas Gaardsoe.

A moment of brilliance was produced by Finidi George, who scored with a delightful chip, before Jamie Clapham netted late to cap off a memorable win. However this was one of the only highlights in a campaign that saw Town suffer relegation from the Premier League.

Ipswich Town 5-0 Millwall – September 2000

A first League Cup win by this scoreline saw Town progress to the third round, having previously lost 2-0 in the first leg at the Den.

The second leg saw the Lions go down to ten men. David Johnson netted a brace, while Titus Bramble, Matt Holland and Jim Magilton scored the other goals. The Blues would reach the semi-final of that competition that year, but were beaten by Birmingham.

Ipswich Town 5-0 Stoke City – September 1984

We now head to the 1980s under Bobby Ferguson as Town bagged five at home against the Potters, with John Wark striking twice in the game.

Paul Mariner, Eric Gates and Burley netted the other goals in a season where Town finished 12th in the top flight.

Ipswich Town 5-0 Widzew Lodz – November 1980

A John Wark hat-trick in the UEFA Cup as Town beat their Polish counterparts in the first leg of the third round, while Alan Brazil and Mariner scored the others.

Of course, Sir Bobby Robson’s side went on the win the competition that season.

Ipswich Town 5-0 Norwich City – February – 1977

Trevor Whymark was the hat-trick hero for Town, who enjoyed this East Anglian Derby thrashing in Suffolk.

Wark and Mariner got the other goals for the Blues that day, who ended up finishing third in the top flight that season, five points behind leaders Liverpool.

Ipswich Town 5-0 Landskrona Bois – September 1977

Another big win in Europe as Whymark netted four goals against Swedish opposition. Town cruised to the next round of the UEFA Cup.

In that same season, Town also put five past Northampton in the League Cup, with Whymark bagging a brace.

Ipswich Town 5-0 Bristol City – August 1967

Another hat-trick scorer, this time Frank Brogan, who netted a treble against the Robins in a season that Bill McGarry guided the club to the Second Division title.

Colin Viljoen and Danny Hegan were the other goalscorers that day. It was the Blues’ opening home game in 1967/68.

Ipswich Town 5-0 Newport County- February 1957

Another season were Town ended up winning their league as Sir Alf Ramsey’s side lifted the Division 3 (South) title in 1956/57.

Doug Millward and Ted Phillips both scored braces, while Neil Myles netted the other against the Exiles.

Ipswich Town 5-0 Walsall – April 1953

Another big scoreline from the third tier in the 1950s as Tommy Parker notched a brace against the Saddlers during the 1952/53 season.

Goals from John Elsworthy, Joe Ball and an own goal from William Green gave Town all three points.

Ipswich Town 5-0 Brighton – September 1951

A season before, Town had fired five goals past the Seagulls, with Sam McCrory netting a brace, while Tommy Parker, Tom Garneys and an own goal from Des Tennant saw them claim a third straight win the league that season.

Despite a good start Town ended up finishing the 1951/52 campaign in 17th place.

Ipswich Town 5-0 Norwich City – September 1946

The original Destruction Derby as Town put five past their local rivals after the end of World War 2, with Albert Day netting the first East Anglian Derby hat-trick.

A brace from Tommy Parker wrapped up the win for the Blues, who made it four straight derby wins in all competitions.
